One of our favourite ways to experience this is from a raft.
Instead of travelling under engine power, we can quietly float downstream with the current, watching the riverbanks as we go.
When conditions allow, this creates wonderfully peaceful encounters. Bears may continue fishing, feeding, or interacting naturally as we observe them respectfully from the river.
It’s less about rushing from one sighting to another and more about experiencing the entire ecosystem.
Salmon move beneath the raft.
Bald eagles watch from cottonwoods.
River otters appear unexpectedly.
And towering Coast Mountains surround you the entire way.
Which Has More Grizzly Bears?
This is difficult to compare directly.
Wildlife is wild, and sightings can never be guaranteed in either destination.
Both regions support important populations of coastal grizzly bears, and seasonal food sources have a major influence on where bears concentrate.
In Bella Coola, the fall salmon run creates particularly productive viewing conditions.
