Tucked between the Coast Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the Bella Coola Valley is one of British Columbia’s most spectacular—and still surprisingly uncrowded—destinations.
This is a place where glacier-covered mountains rise directly from the valley floor, grizzly bears fish for salmon in wild rivers, waterfalls tumble through old-growth rainforest, and adventure is never very far away.
Unlike destinations such as Banff or Whistler, Bella Coola hasn’t been built around mass tourism. There are no crowds of tour buses, busy pedestrian villages, or long lines for attractions.
Instead, you’ll find wilderness.
Some of Bella Coola’s best experiences are guided adventures. Others cost absolutely nothing.
If you’re planning your first trip, here are 15 of the best things to do in Bella Coola, BC.
1. See Grizzly Bears in the Wild
For many visitors, this is the reason they first discover Bella Coola.
The valley is home to a healthy population of wild grizzly bears, and the rivers provide an important seasonal food source.
During spring and summer, bears are distributed throughout the landscape searching for vegetation, berries, insects, and other foods.
Then the salmon arrive.
By late August and September, grizzlies increasingly concentrate around productive salmon rivers, creating some of the best bear-viewing opportunities in British Columbia.
There are several ways to experience grizzly bears in Bella Coola, including guided river floats and established viewing areas.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but if seeing a wild grizzly is high on your bucket list, September is an excellent time to visit Bella Coola.
2. Float the Atnarko River
This might be our favourite way to experience the valley.
Instead of travelling under engine power, you quietly drift downstream while the current carries you through the landscape.
Towering mountains surround the river.
Bald eagles watch from the trees.
Salmon may move beneath the raft.
And during bear-viewing season, grizzlies can sometimes be observed feeding along the riverbanks.
Even without seeing a bear, floating the river is an extraordinary experience.
It’s quiet, peaceful, and completely immersive.
Rather than feeling like you’re watching the Great Bear Rainforest from the outside, you feel like you’re moving through the middle of it.
3. Explore Tweedsmuir Provincial Park
At more than 980,000 hectares, Tweedsmuir Provincial Park is one of British Columbia’s largest provincial parks.
And part of it is right at Bella Coola’s doorstep.
The park protects enormous areas of mountains, glaciers, forests, rivers, alpine landscapes, and wildlife habitat.
Visitors can hike, fish, photograph wildlife, explore trails, and simply drive through some spectacular scenery.
If you’re visiting Bella Coola, you’ll almost certainly spend part of your trip exploring the western side of Tweedsmuir.
4. Hike Through the Bella Coola Valley
You don’t need to be an experienced mountaineer to enjoy hiking in Bella Coola.
The valley offers everything from short rainforest walks to demanding alpine adventures.
One of our favourite things about hiking here is the lack of crowds.
It’s still possible to spend hours on a beautiful trail and encounter very few other people.
Depending on your experience and conditions, hikes around the valley can take you through old-growth forest, beside rivers, toward waterfalls, or high above the valley floor.
For adventurous hikers, Mount Gurr offers spectacular views over the Bella Coola Valley.
5. Visit Burnt Bridge
Burnt Bridge is one of our favourite accessible outdoor adventures in the valley.
The trail travels through beautiful forest and provides an easy way to experience Bella Coola’s wilderness without committing to a major hike.
It’s ideal for travellers looking for a quieter afternoon, families, photographers, or anyone who simply wants to spend some time beneath the rainforest canopy.
Bring good footwear, slow down, and enjoy the forest.
In Bella Coola, the journey is often just as worthwhile as the destination.
6. Experience Nuxalk Culture
You can’t truly understand Bella Coola without understanding that this is Nuxalkulmc—the traditional territory of the Nuxalk Nation.
The Nuxalk people have lived in and cared for this land since time immemorial, and their culture, history, art, language, and relationship with the landscape are inseparable from the valley.
Visitors may have opportunities to experience Nuxalk art and cultural experiences offered by Nuxalk people and organizations.
Approach these experiences respectfully and seek out opportunities led or authorized by the Nation.
Learning about the people who have called this valley home for thousands of years adds an entirely different dimension to a Bella Coola trip.
7. Drive the Famous Bella Coola Hill
For road-trippers, simply getting to Bella Coola can become one of the biggest adventures.
Highway 20 crosses the Chilcotin Plateau before suddenly dropping into the Bella Coola Valley on the famous Bella Coola Hill, sometimes still called “The Hill.”
The descent is steep, dramatic, and unforgettable.
As you travel downward, the landscape changes remarkably quickly.
Dry Chilcotin forest gives way to enormous Coast Mountain peaks, waterfalls, and lush coastal vegetation.
Take your time, drive according to conditions, use appropriate gearing, and enjoy one of British Columbia’s great road trips.
8. Go Fishing
Bella Coola’s rivers have supported people and wildlife for thousands of years.
For anglers, the region offers opportunities to fish for salmon and trout depending on season, location, regulations, and openings.
But fishing here is about much more than catching a fish.
Standing beside a glacier-fed river surrounded by mountains is an experience in itself.
If you’re unfamiliar with local waterways, hiring an experienced guide can help you understand conditions, techniques, regulations, and where fishing is appropriate.
Always check current fisheries regulations before heading out.
9. Chase Waterfalls
Water is everywhere in Bella Coola.
Snow and glaciers high in the Coast Mountains feed countless creeks that tumble down steep valley walls.
Some waterfalls require hiking.
Others can be seen almost directly from the road.
Spring and early summer are particularly spectacular when snowmelt increases water flow.
One of the joys of exploring Bella Coola is discovering waterfalls you didn’t even know were there.
After heavy rain, entirely new cascades seem to appear overnight.
10. Explore the Coast by Boat
Bella Coola isn’t only a mountain destination.
Follow the valley west and eventually the river meets the Pacific Ocean.
Beyond it lies a maze of fjords, islands, channels, waterfalls, and remote coastline extending deep into the Great Bear Rainforest.
Marine excursions can provide opportunities to see seals, sea lions, whales, eagles, waterfalls, and spectacular coastal scenery depending on the route and season.
The contrast is remarkable.
One day you can be standing beside a salmon river beneath enormous mountains.
The next, you’re travelling through a Pacific fjord surrounded by rainforest.
11. Take a Scenic Flight
It’s difficult to appreciate the scale of the Coast Mountains until you see them from above.
A scenic flight can reveal an entirely different side of Bella Coola.
Glaciers stretch between mountain peaks.
Icefields disappear toward the horizon.
Remote alpine lakes sit in valleys that have no roads or trails.
Rivers wind through enormous wilderness areas.
For photographers—or anyone wanting a true perspective on how wild this region still is—a flight over the Coast Mountains can be unforgettable.
Even the scheduled flight between Vancouver and Bella Coola can provide spectacular views when conditions cooperate.
12. Watch the Salmon Run
Every year, Pacific salmon return from the ocean to Bella Coola’s rivers.
It’s one of nature’s great migrations.
By late summer and fall, spawning waterways become the centre of the ecosystem.
Grizzly bears arrive to feed.
Bald eagles gather in the trees.
River otters become active.
And salmon push relentlessly upstream to complete the same journey generations made before them.
Watching a river fill with salmon helps explain why the Great Bear Rainforest supports so much wildlife.
The salmon don’t simply feed the bears.
They help feed the entire forest.
13. Photograph Wildlife and Landscapes
Bella Coola is a photographer’s dream.
You don’t need to be a professional.
Sometimes the hardest part is deciding where to point the camera.
Possible subjects include:
- Grizzly bears
- Black bears
- Bald eagles
- River otters
- Salmon
- Mountain goats
- Waterfalls
- Glaciers
- Rainforest
- Wildflowers
- Coast Mountain landscapes
Early morning and evening can offer particularly beautiful light, while misty weather creates the atmospheric conditions that make the rainforest feel almost prehistoric.
Bring more memory cards than you think you’ll need.
14. Spend a Day Doing Almost Nothing
This might sound strange on a list of the best things to do in Bella Coola.
But it’s important.
Don’t schedule every minute.
Sit beside the river.
Read a book.
Have a long lunch.
Walk through the forest.
Watch the mountains change colour as the sun moves across the valley.
Sit around a fire after dinner.
Look at the stars.
Bella Coola isn’t a destination that needs to be rushed.
Many guests arrive with a packed itinerary and eventually realize some of their favourite moments happened when they weren’t doing anything at all.
15. Stay at a Wilderness Lodge
Where you stay can become part of the Bella Coola experience.
The valley offers everything from campgrounds and independent cabins to traditional lodges and all-inclusive wilderness stays.
At Firvale Wilderness Camp, we’ve created our own version of the Bella Coola experience.
Guests stay in handcrafted cabins and luxury glamping domes surrounded by the Coast Mountains and Great Bear Rainforest.
Days are spent exploring.
Depending on the season, that might mean hiking, fishing, floating rivers, searching for wildlife, visiting waterfalls, or experiencing the salmon run.
Then everyone returns to the lodge for chef-prepared meals, a sauna, time around the fire, and a comfortable place to relax.
For us, the goal isn’t to isolate guests from the wilderness.
It’s to give them a comfortable base from which to experience it.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Bella Coola?
There’s no single answer.
May and June bring spectacular waterfalls, snow-covered mountains, lush spring vegetation, and fewer visitors.
July and August are excellent for hiking, fishing, river adventures, families, couples, and general exploration.
Late August and September bring the salmon run and increasingly concentrated grizzly bear activity.
If bears are your main priority, we’d lean toward September.
If you want the broadest mix of adventure, warm weather, and outdoor activities, July and August are excellent choices.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Bella Coola?
We recommend at least four days, but five to seven is even better.
Bella Coola isn’t the kind of destination where you want to arrive, take a photograph, and leave.
Weather changes.
Wildlife moves.
Plans evolve.
Having several days gives you the flexibility to explore without rushing.
A week also allows you to combine guided experiences with independent adventures and a little downtime.
Is Bella Coola Worth Visiting?
If you’re looking for shopping, nightlife, dozens of restaurants, and busy tourist attractions, Bella Coola probably isn’t the right destination.
But if you’re looking for mountains, wildlife, rainforest, rivers, adventure, Indigenous culture, and genuine wilderness without the crowds found in many famous mountain destinations, it’s difficult to think of many places quite like it.
Bella Coola still feels like somewhere you discover.
That’s becoming increasingly rare.
Discover Bella Coola
Many people first hear about Bella Coola because of its grizzly bears.
Then they arrive and realize the bears are only one part of the story.
The mountains are bigger than expected.
The rainforest is greener.
The rivers are wilder.
The distances feel larger.
And everything moves a little more slowly.
Come for the bears.
Come for the hiking.
Come for the fishing, waterfalls, culture, rivers, or simply the opportunity to get away from crowded destinations.
Whatever brings you here, give yourself enough time to explore.
Because the best thing to do in Bella Coola might simply be discovering how much there is to do.
